Internet Cut Off in 22 Townships of Five States and Regions
By MPA
After 8 months of taking power, the military has shut down the internet in 22 townships of three regions and two States.
The internet blackout townships are the ones where clashes are breaking out, but in some completely shut down areas, Mytel SIM cards still work for going online, according to residents.
“When we look at the shutdown areas, they are clash-ridden areas and where they (the military) have suffered great casualties. We could also assume that they are preparing for war, like the four-cut method,” said one anti-military dictatorship, revolution participant from Sagaing to MPA.
Currently, the internet is shut down in Hpakant twonship of Kachin State; Thantlang, Falam, Tedim, Matupi, Kanpetlet, Mindat, Tonzang and Paletwa townships of Chin State; Gangaw, Htilin, Taungdwingyi townships of Magway region; Ayadaw, Yinmar Pin, Kani, Pale, Yay Oo, Taze and Butalin tonwships of Sagaing region and Myingyan and Mogok townships of Mandalay region.
Among those states and regions, Chin State is the most shut down one and clashes have frequently broken out between the local defense forces and the terrorist military.
“Chin State is entirely cut off. Only Hakha is left to not harm the SAC’s administrative mechanisms. The rest towns are all shut down,” said a Chin local.
Among the cut-off townships, Sagaing townships are most frequently raided. In addition to raids, houses are burnt and local residents are escaping leaving their homes.
According to news MPA has learned, even though the internet has been cut off in Hpakant, Mytel SIM cards still work for the internet and in some areas, they are still used.
Regarding the internet shutdown, the terrorist SAC’s spokesperson Zaw Min Tun was contacted through all the operators by phone, but the calls were not answered.
Since, the internet shutdown areas are where clashes are ongoing, it is difficult to obtain news of the military raids and support activities have also become difficult, according to local rescue group.
“Now, communication is very difficult. In Thantlang, it’s hard to get news of the villages. There are some donation help by other countries for IDPs, but it has become very difficult due to the internet shutdown,” said a Thantlang Placement Affairs Committee (TPAC) official.
In Myanmar, the terrorist military has often carried out the four-cut strategy – cutting food supplies, communication, arm support and financial means – to heighten the clashes.
