Some Factories Plan to Reopen Despite SAC’s Extended Holiday
24 July 2021 By MPA
Despite the SAC’s holiday extension from July 26 to August 1, it has been learnt that some factories and businesses will reopen, according to some factories.
According to SAC’s announcement, the holiday has been extended to August 1 and businesses with the exception of banks and financial ones can be reopened.
The announcement allows businesses to run in line with COVID-19 rules and regulations to keep up productivity and those who wish to resume may do so on July 26.
“We just had a meeting this morning. Factories will reopen, almost all the factories in our zone. Since before this 9-day long holiday, more than 20% of the workforce were sick and work had been off. Things have gone even worse these recent days. I’m not sure whether employees would go to work or not but all have been informed,” said Ko Zaw Zaw Aung, a HR manager at diamond shoe factory in Ywar Thar Gyi factory zone, Yangon, to MPA.
The factory zones have tens of thousands of employees, it could worsen the conditions if reopened.
“I heard about our factory too. But we have not been told to go to work. There are about 8000 employees in our factory. Some get sick and some lose smell. Even though we’re afraid of the disease, we’re also afraid of losing our jobs. We’re considering if we should go or not if it reopens,” said a Hlaing Thar Yar factory employee.
It is still being discussed whether to reopen the factories and no solid answer has been reached thus far, said U Hla Tun Kyaw, an East Dagon Industrial Zone management head official.
“According to the announcement, we can rerun in line with COVID-19 regulations and nothing has been decided yet till now. We haven’t informed the employees. I think we will make it clear next Monday,” he said.
In Yangon, COVID third wave is severely raging with increasing deaths and there are confirmed patients now in almost every neighborhood.
