On January 4th, a doctor who was a political prisoner who was released from Myeik prison was re-arrested by the SAC even in front of the prison gate.
The Assistance Association for Political Prisoners – (Burma) AAPP announced that political prisoner Dr. Min Than Pai, who was released on amnesty from Myeik Prison in Tanintharyi Division, was re-arrested in front of the prison door.
It is reported that Dr. Min Htet Paing was sentenced to three years in prison under Section 505-A of the Penal Code.
“During Than Shwe’s reign, a person was immediately released and then arrested for another case. When a person was released on amnesty for the first time during Ma-Ah-La reign (Min Aung Hlaing’s reign), he was re-arrested after he got out of prison. It is a very cruel dictator’s behavior. This immediate re-arrest is threatening to re-arrest anyone who is freed,” said a former political prisoner based in Mae Sot.
Dr. Min Htet Paing was arrested in early April 2021 at the Kyay Nan Taing bridge, Pathaung Village Tract, Myeik Township, on the charge of organizing and inciting riots and violence by posting false information on a social networking site.
On January 4th, the SAC released on amnesty 7,012 prisoners, according to the AAPP’s January 6th release, only around 300 political prisoners were released.
