Ma Nobel Aye _ a political prisoner _ who was arrested at Nyaung Khar Shey checkpoint in Waw Township, Bago Region _ was shot to death by the junta troops, according to her family members.
“Last February 8, the junta troops shot to death Ma Nobel Aye near Kyaiklat village in Thanatpin Township, under the pretext that she tried to escape on the way back from Waw Court,” a family member confirmed.
“My elder sister Ma Nobel Aye and a man _ who was arrested at the same time _ were remanded in Waw Township Court. On the way back from the court, they (junta) shot both to die under the pretext that both fled to Laykwin side when they arrived at Kyailat village in Thanatpin Township. Then both were sent to Waw Hospital. The Waw Township’s parliamentarian confirmed to the family regarding the information. They(junta) buried both as unattended dead bodies, but we don’t know where both were buried,” he said.
When Ma Nobel Aye was arrested on January 29, a sniper, a gun (M 16), a pistol, 5 ammunition boxes, 2900 bullets and 6 kg of gunpowder were seized, according to the junta’s propaganda telegram channels.
“After the military coup, there is not just oppression in the prisons but there are killings like this. They (junta) commit inhumane acts like this during these days. The International Community also needs to be able to bring justice to those who are being killed like this,” said Ko Thaik Tun Oo, a member of the Myanmar Political Prisoners Network.
He continued to say that he believes those who participated in the torture, oppressing and killing of prisoners like this will stop only if the National Unity Government (NUG) arrests and punishes those effectively.
Ma Nobel Aye was reportedly sentenced to 42 years in prison for participating in the student strike movement in 1996. She was arrested again in the fuel case in 2007 and she also worked in social activities during the Covid-19 period.
