The military opened fire with heavy weapons on Thilin village in Thandwe Township, Rakhine State, killing 10 people at 9:00 p.m. on May 14, according to locals.
The village was shot with heavy weapons by the junta troops from Bar Taung military camp, and seven civilians aged 30 and 20, including U Nyi Lay aged 50 in the village, died on the spot by the junta shelling.
“7 people died on the spot, and another 3 died when they arrived at the hospital. I heard a grandmother in Out Natmaw also died. The junta navy was shooting until afternoon,” a local woman from Thandwe told MPA.
Likewise, there were air attacks by the military this morning, and phone lines were also cut down in the region.
“Fighting is happening in my village, Kyaung Kone. Kyaukphyu field near Shwe Lay bridge at Kyauk Kone was bombed by the military jet,” a resident of Kyauk Kone village said.
Due to the intense fighting, most of the residents from the nearby villages _ including Thilin and Shwe Lay village _ have fled to safety, and some people were trapped in the fighting as the military blocked the roads into the city.
According to the statement by the Humanitarian and Development Cooperation Office (HDCO) of the United League of Arakan (ULA/AA) on April 4, 179 civilians were killed within 5 months of resurgent fighting in Rakhine State after the military coup, and the death toll is still rising.
