People who own houses and shops are reportedly allowed to return to Laukkai town in northern Shan State.
People who have lived in Laukkai with full local identity cards have been allowed to re-enter the town since February 1, according to a resident of Laukkai.
“Those who own houses and shops are allowed now to come back after the proof. They have come back since the 1st of this month. Only ethnic people are allowed to enter, but Burmese people are not allowed to enter without proof,” he said.
As for those who have moved to work in Laukkai town, they need to get guarantees from their respective bosses, and only a few businesses can operate, according to a worker who has moved to Laukkai.
“Currently, if those want to work here, they must have a guarantee from the boss to allow them to enter the town. There is no electricity in the town, but water is somewhere in the town. If those come without proof, they should first ask for a guarantee from the boss. If not, it is very dangerous,” he said.
There is reportedly a power outage in Laukkai town and only one mobile operator is caught, and officials are working on restoration processes.
“Residential people are coming back to the town, but not as much as before. The police and soldiers also check when they are walking around the town. Residents who fled war have not come back yet, so there are thieves who stole those whose belongings in the town. Only the Telenor phone line is caught better,” he added.
Currently, only Laukkai residents who have taken refuge in Mongla town are being given priority accommodation, according to MPA’s investigation.
