During the 21 days of December, 25 women across the country were reportedly killed by the military junta.
The Assistance Association for Political Prisoners (AAPP-Burma) announced that 25 women and 48 men died nationwide due to the military junta from December 1st to 21st, with 23 people in Sagaing Region.
Chaw Su Han from the Women Alliance Burma said that the lives of the women arrested by the junta troops are not safe and that the junta troops violate the military code of ethics set by the international.
“The international army’s military ethics do not allow arresting, beating, or torturing women and children. Myanmar’s military, led by Min Aung Hlaing, has been doing cases of torture and rape against women,” she said.
She said that the lives of women during the revolution were difficult, and monthly sanitary pads became expensive. Due to financial difficulties in the Anyar region (the central area of Myanmar), even monthly sanitary pads could not be used adequately.
“Some women who are pregnant have to run. If they are injured, it is a major challenge for women such emergency situations. If a military column marches to raid villages, they have to run away from the hands of the army. At this time, law and order have not yet been able to judge accurately, so the safety of their lives is becoming a challenge for women,” she continued.
The local residents of Kyar Paing Village, Monywa Township, have been fleeing for 24 days now, and some families have no more male members, and it has become difficult for them to eat, live, and travel, said a woman who has been displaced.
“Among those people who were killed, both the husband and the brother were killed. Now there are only women left in the family. They don’t know how to ride a motorcycle, so it’s not easy to move and travel for them. They have been fleeing, so they don’t have anything to do for a living, “she said.
From January 2023 to December 22, 2023, the military junta arrested 577 women across the country, of whom 536 are still in custody, according to the AAPP’s statement.
