PNLA spokesperson Khun Rain Yam said that more than 20 religious buildings were damaged by the junta’s heavy weaponry and airstrikes during the fighting in the Pa-O region of southern Shan State.
Khun Rain Yam said the religious building damage occurred due to heavy weapons and air strikes by the junta during the fighting that started on January 21, 2024, and ended on May 27, 2024, in Southern Shan State.
On May 27, 2024, the junta troops fired heavy weapons into Naung Kyaw Village, Hsihseng Township, damaging a monastery and a house.
“There was no fighting. No one was there. Neither was our group. They (junta troops) just started. There were no casualties. The villagers had already fled into the woods,” said PNLA spokesperson Khun Rain Yam.
In addition, from January 21st to May 18th, when the fighting started in southern Shan State, 75 civilians were killed and 99 were injured, 693 houses, including religious buildings, were destroyed, and nearly 60,000 people were displaced, according to the Pa-O Youth Association (PYO).
“All the villagers have fled, and the army fires heavy weapons almost every day. Yesterday, it was said that a monastery and a house were hit. Then I heard that they took household stuff,” said a man from Hsihseng.
In Southern Shan State, the residents killed and damaged buildings by the military junta’s heavy weaponry and airstrikes were from Hsihseng, Pin Laung, Hopone, and Nyaung Shwe townships.
