On May 29, the BNI-Myanmar Peace Monitor reported that nearly 150 civilians were killed over a two-week period due to direct targeting by junta forces. These deaths resulted from actions including arrests, killings, burnings, torture, and fatalities during interrogations.
The BNI reported that 145 civilians were killed by the military junta between May 8 and May 21, 2024.
According to BNI’s report, the highest number of civilian deaths in the past two weeks occurred in Sagaing Region, followed by Magway Region, and then Rakhine State.
“The revolutionary forces have managed to control in Sagaing and Magwe regions, which are flat land. In some townships, they can control up to 70 percent of the area. Because of this, we see that the military junta is continuing to attack civilians in the flat lands where it is easy to raid and attack,” a defense soldier from Sagaing told MPA.
An official from the BNI-Myanmar Peace Monitor told MPA that special attention is needed following the massacre of over 30 civilians on May 11, 2024, in Lethtutaw Village, Myinmu Township, Sagaing Region.
“Looking at that incident, it has to be said that the civilians were not able to knowingly avoid the news that the junta column would enter. With the junta and their accomplices facing failures on all fronts, they are now targeting unarmed and innocent civilians as a form of revenge. We should take a lesson from this.,” he said.
During those two weeks, 313 junta soldiers and 28 People’s Defense Forces soldiers were killed, according to BNI reports. The highest number of junta soldier casualties occurred in Rakhine State, Sagaing Region, and Mandalay Region.
