In the first six weeks of 2025, junta forces killed 33 civilians, including 17 women, in Sagaing Region, according to a report by the Assistance Association for Political Prisoners (AAPP).
The AAPP documented the deaths of 33 civilians in Sagaing Region between Jan.1 and Feb.19, 2025.
A defense force member based in Chaung-U Township told MPA, “Since February, the junta has been launching relentless airstrikes in townships like Chaung-U and Monywa. Recently, they have also begun using paramotors (motorized paragliders) to attack civilian areas without provocation.”
Among the victims were seven children under 18. Of the 33 fatalities, 26 were caused by military airstrikes, four resulted from artillery shelling, and three individuals died after being arrested by the military.
Ko Aye Lwin, a political prisoner held at Yinmarbin police station, died in custody on Feb.13 due to inadequate medical care. The AAPP reported that his body was later returned to his family in Ywar Htaung Village, Yinmarbin Township.
According to the AAPP, Ko Aye Lwin had been arrested by the junta and charged under Section 52(C) of the Counter-Terrorism Law. He was sentenced to three years in prison and was scheduled for release on March 22, 2025.
