At least 42 women were killed in military junta attacks across the country within the first 24 days of January, according to a report by the Assistance Association for Political Prisoners (AAPP).
The AAPP confirmed the identities of 42 women killed between January 1 and 24. The victims included five children under 18 and four women over 60. Of these, 36 were killed in junta airstrikes, while six lost their lives to artillery shelling.
A woman who fled a village near Myaing Township’s Kan Ni Pyu Village told MPA, “We fled our village in 2022, fearing the Pyu Saw Htee paramilitary troops. The threat of airstrikes is constant. Now, we can’t even live in groups. When there’s a military raid, we escape to the forests. They keep targeting and bombing schools and monasteries.”
The AAPP further reported that 72 female educators and students were killed in military attacks across the country from Feb.1, 2021, to Jan. 21, 2025.
In one recent incident, a military aircraft bombed a house in Thar Si Village, Taungtha Township, Mandalay Region, around 1:45 a.m. on Thursday. The bombing killed an elderly woman, Daw Zin, who was inside the house at the time.
