On today’s date, August 21, the funeral of Director Phay Maung Sein, a 51-year-old documentary filmmaker and son of the renowned cartoonist U Pe Thein, was held at Yayway Cemetery in Yangon.
On May 28, 2022, Ko Phay Maung Sein was abducted by the military council at a checkpoint in Loikaw, Kayah State, and imprisoned in Loikaw Prison. After he had been transferred from Loikaw Prison to Insein Prison Hospital due to deteriorating health, he was released on August 16, 2023.
However, just three days after his release, he passed away at Sakura Hospital on August 19 at around 2 PM from bone tuberculosis and lung cancer.
The documentary filmmaker Ko Phay Maung Sain had been sentenced to three years in prison under Unlawful Association Act, Section 17(1).
