Myanmar’s shadow National Unity Government (NUG) has called on the international community, regional partners, and neighboring countries to remain alert to the military junta’s exploitation of natural disasters for its own benefit.
Speaking at a national briefing on Tuesday, U Kyaw Zaw, spokesperson for the NUG President’s Office, stressed the need for vigilant monitoring of the junta’s actions.
“ASEAN must not turn a blind eye to the military junta’s continued atrocities against the people of Myanmar,” he said. “Ignoring these violent acts will only weaken efforts to achieve genuine peace and stability.”
He further argued that the military regime cannot offer a solution to Myanmar’s ongoing crisis, urging ASEAN to engage directly with the NUG and revolutionary forces to seek a sustainable political resolution.
ASEAN currently provides humanitarian assistance to earthquake-affected communities through the AHA Center. Malaysia, which holds the ASEAN chairmanship, has also called on junta leader Min Aung Hlaing not to obstruct relief efforts for quake victims.
U Kyaw Zaw expressed gratitude to neighboring countries, ASEAN, the United Nations, and international partners—including the United States, United Kingdom, European Union, Canada, and Australia—for their swift response following the devastating Sagaing earthquake.
Between March 28 and April 23, the junta conducted 196 airstrikes and 64 artillery attacks across Myanmar, including in earthquake-hit areas, resulting in 235 civilian deaths and 427 injuries, according to the NUG’s Ministry of Human Rights.
