More than 100 revolutionary groups in Yangon Region have united to form a Yangon Interim Management Drafting Commission, officials announced after a two-day meeting.
Dr. Bio, a member of the meeting’s organizing committee, said the idea had been in the works for a year and a half, with 160 days spent on formal preparations. The commission, he said, aims to prepare for a potential power vacuum if the military junta collapses, ensuring a smooth, unified transition with minimal disruption to the public.
“This is a proactive step to prevent chaos and to ensure that Spring Revolution forces can take over in a fair and equitable manner,” Dr. Bio said.
The commission, endorsed during the Yangon Platform meeting, includes representatives from parliamentarians, political parties, Civil Disobedience Movement (CDM) participants, ground-based strike forces, revolutionary groups, unions, women’s organizations, minority groups, and intellectuals.
“We need to stabilize Yangon and prepare now — not after the junta falls,” said U Htun Kyi, a member of the working group behind the commission.
Organizers emphasized that gender equality was a key consideration in the selection process. According to Ma De Wi, another member of the working group, women make up over 17 percent of the commission, while LGBT representation stands at three percent.
“This is just the beginning of broader efforts to promote women’s leadership and ensure inclusive governance structures,” she said.
The commission’s member list has been released, and its first official meeting is scheduled for May 11. Initial discussions were also held with officials from the National Unity Government (NUG) at the Thai-Myanmar border to support the commission’s formation.
