The Myanmar junta has been arresting over 30 youths each night in Yangon’s suburbs as part of its forced conscription drive, the Rangoon Scout Network (RSN) reported.
According to an RSN source, the military has ramped up patrols and conscription raids, initially detaining at least 10 youths per night. However, as the recruitment deadline nears, the number of arrests has tripled.
“As the recruitment deadline approaches and they haven’t met their quota, the arrests become more aggressive,” a source told MPA.
The military typically begins its patrols around 7 p.m., with most arrests occurring by 9 p.m.
“Once the sun sets, they start hunting for people,” the source added.
According to the RSN, a police vehicle arrived at the corner of Malar Myaing 6th Street in Ward 16, Hlaing Township, around 9:45 p.m. on Wednesday and arrested two youths who had been drinking alcohol.
A resident near Insein Road in Hlaing Township said, “The military has been arresting youths at night for a long time in our neighborhood. It’s become so frequent that it feels routine.”
Those detained are often forced to pay between 1 and 3.5 million kyat for their release. If they fail to pay within a day, they are typically transferred to another detention center, according to a Rangoon Scout Network official.
The RSN is a revolutionary platform that monitors junta activities in the Yangon Region, gathering and sharing real-time reports on significant events.
