The Myanmar military junta’s planned January 2026 election has received backing from Russia and Belarus, both of which have pledged to send observer teams to monitor the process, according to Major General Zaw Min Tun, the head of the junta’s True News Information Team.
Returning from Russia, Major General Zaw Min Tun told pro-junta media at the Nay Pyi Taw military airport on Sunday that the election is expected to take place between late December 2025 and mid-January 2026.
Meanwhile, coup leader Senior General Min Aung Hlaing, speaking to pro-junta media aboard his flight from Russia, said, “If you truly want a multi-party democracy, stop causing trouble and just cooperate.”
He further urged all parties to participate in the election if they believe in multi-party democracy.
Min Aung Hlaing first disclosed the election timeline during his visit to Belarus.
From March 3 to 9, Min Aung Hlaing and his delegation visited Russia and Belarus.
