Renowned LGBT writer Saw Han Nway Oo, an active participant in Myanmar’s Spring Revolution, passed away in exile at around 9 p.m. on Sunday in Mae Sot, Thailand, due to illness.
According to a close acquaintance in Mae Sot, Saw Han Nway Oo, who was just 28 years old at the time of her passing, had been receiving medical treatment for five months in Chiang Mai and Mae Sot, Thailand.
“She has found peace, but she left us too soon. I can’t find the words to express how heartbroken we are,” the acquaintance told MPA.
In September 2021, the military junta arrested Saw Han Nway Oo under Section 505(a). She was released the following month under an amnesty. Despite the risks, she courageously spoke out about the sexual violence she endured during interrogation.
Her passing has left a deep impact on her friends and comrades, who expressed their grief on social media.
“This spring, a flower named Saw Han Nway Oo has fallen. She has truly left us all. May she find peace in her next life,” one user wrote.
Her funeral was held on Monday afternoon at a cemetery in Mae Sot, Thailand.
