The National Unity Government (NUG) has extended an invitation to all Shan ethnic groups to work together in building a new federal democratic union.
The shadow government conveyed this message during the 78th Shan National Day ceremony, which falls on Friday.
In its message, the NUG honored generations of Shan ethnic leaders who have fought for democracy and self-determination, as well as Shan national heroes who have sacrificed their lives, blood, and efforts during the ongoing Spring Revolution.
It said Shan national revolutionary movements have long strengthened both the people and their revolutionary allies, from the country’s independence to the present-day Spring Revolution.
However, in a separate message to the ceremony, General Yawd Serk, Chairman of the Restoration Council of Shan State (RCSS), emphasized that political issues should be resolved through dialogue rather than military action.
He attributed the 77 years of ongoing civil war to a lack of sincerity among stakeholders, failure to implement the Panglong Agreement, an inability to build trust, and insufficient dialogue to address conflicts.
General Yawd Serk reaffirmed the RCSS’s commitment to resolving issues through dialogue and expressed openness to discussions with all groups.
The RCSS, an ethnic armed organization that has signed the Nationwide Ceasefire Agreement (NCA), frequently engages with the military junta.
