The Myanmar military faced significant defeats and heavy losses throughout 2024, according to U Kyaw Zaw, spokesperson for the President’s Office of the National Unity Government (NUG).
The NUG plans to ramp up its collaboration with revolutionary forces to escalate military operations in the coming year.
During the NUG’s public and international briefing on Tuesday, U Kyaw Zaw highlighted the Myanmar military’s significant failures in 2024, citing the deaths, injuries, and capture of 53 senior officers, including major generals, brigadier generals, and colonels, as clear evidence of its deteriorating position.
“The heavily defeated military junta continues its violent attacks on civilians, even during the New Year period and into early 2025. Indiscriminate aerial bombings in non-combat zones, such as Kyauktaw and Kyauk Ni Maw Villages in Ramree Township, Rakhine State, and Tanai in Kachin State, illustrate their desperate tactics,” U Kyaw Zaw said.
He added that the NUG, in collaboration with ethnic allies and resistance forces, plans to intensify revolutionary efforts this year. The resistance will grow stronger militarily, accompanied by broader political agreements.
In response to severe setbacks, the military junta has escalated unlawful forced conscription, abducting both underage youths and adults for military service without restraint. These operations have taken place across the country, including in major cities, at all hours of the day and night.
Notable defeats suffered by the junta in 2024 include the capture of the Northeastern Regional Command in Lashio by the Myanmar National Democratic Alliance Army (MNDAA) and allied forces on Aug. 3, and the seizure of the Ann-based Western Regional Military Command by the Arakan Army (AA) on Dec.20.
