The military junta now controls less than one-third of Myanmar, according to the 2024 Military Developments Report released on Saturday by the Ministry of Defense of Myanmar’s National Unity Government (NUG).
According to the report, as of December 2024, the People’s Defense Forces (PDF) and allied ethnic resistance organizations have established control over 114 townships, including full governance in 48 townships across 95 towns.
Revolutionary warfare remains active in 79 townships, leaving the military junta with control over only 107 townships nationwide.
A Yangon-based political analyst told MPA, “The resilience and support of the people have enabled significant victories in 2024, striking a major blow to the junta’s dominance. With robust international assistance, Min Aung Hlaing may be fleeing to Russia by 2025.”
The report reveals that the PDF and ethnic resistance groups now control 40 percent of Myanmar’s townships. Active revolutionary warfare persists in 24 percent of townships, while the junta retains control over just 32 percent of the country’s territory.
Revolutionary forces have also extended their influence over key border trade hubs, significantly disrupting Myanmar’s economic connections with neighboring countries such as China, India, Thailand, and Bangladesh. The junta has lost control of at least 11 critical border trade towns, reflecting the expanding influence of resistance forces.
The NUG’s Ministry of Defense reported the success of several large-scale operations, including the Shan-Mandalay Operation, which advanced into the Mandalay Region and secured Pinlebu Town. Thousands of junta troops were engaged in counterattacks during these operations.
Under the strategic plan “All Roads To Naypyidaw,” the PDF and allied resistance forces have coordinated major campaigns across the country. These include the Anyar Aung Myay Operation focusing on Central Myanmar, the Shan-Mandalay Operation, the Sittaung River Operation, the Yoema-Ayeyar Operation, and Coastal Operations, targeting multiple regions and further weakening junta control.
