Comments—criticizing and condemning the Chinese government for interfering in Myanmar’s internal affairs— circulate on the Facebook page of the Chinese Embassy in Myanmar almost daily.
Regardless of the content of the posts on the Myanmar Chinese Embassy’s Facebook page, comments often appear condemning and urging China to stop supporting the military junta which has been killing civilians, refrain from meddling in Myanmar’s internal affairs, and respect the will of the Myanmar people, according to a Yangon-based political columnist.
“No matter what the embassy posts on its Facebook page, there are plenty of comments from Myanmar citizens criticizing China beneath it. For example, even posts unrelated to Myanmar, such as those about Chinese rice fields or trade fairs, comments of disapproval toward China’s meddling in Myanmar’s affairs arise,” the columnist told MPA.
After the embassy posted a message wishing for happiness during the Thadingyut Festival on October 17, a user named Bryan Kyaw commented, “If you really want Myanmar people to be happy, stay out of our affairs and mind your own business.”
Despite the Chinese embassy posting festive well-wishes on the full moon day of Thadingyut, China remains silent on the junta’s airstrikes that target civilians in Nawnghkio, Tabayin, and Gwa on the same day, a revolutionary fighter from Lashio noted.
“China claims Myanmar’s internal affairs are none of its business when the junta kills civilians, but they exert pressure on resistance forces by all means to stop fighting as if it is not interfering,” the source added.
China has also reportedly been pressuring ethnic resistance groups along the Myanmar-China border to cease their conflicts while closing border gates and cutting off supplies.
Despite Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi claiming that China’s diplomatic policy towards Myanmar extends to all of its people, the Chinese government has been acting in ways that undermine and oppose the Myanmar people, according to the political columnist.
