The Chinland Defense Force (CDF) in Matupi has announced on 22 October that it will collaborate with a third party to resolve ongoing internal disputes within the divisions in Matupi Town, Chin State, that was seized recently.
The decision was made following a six-monthly meeting of CDF (Matupi) Division 2 on 19 and 20 October.
“While we do not yet know the details of what the third party will propose, their role will be to mediate and find common ground. The discussions will focus on what each group wants, what compromises can be made, and what terms need to be agreed upon. We are committed to cooperating and actively participating in the mediation efforts to ensure a resolution,” Salai Nang Jone Kaim, a spokesperson for CDF (Matupi) Division 2 told MPA.
Salai Bway Oak, spokesperson of Division 1 of CDF (Matupi) said that they had already held discussions with the Peace Commission, a group formed by local religious leaders, and Division 2 is expected to engage with the commission as well.
“Whether the two divisions meet will depend on the Peace Commission’s efforts. If things proceed positively, a meeting between both divisions is likely,” said Salai Bway Oak, a spokesperson of Division 1.
Efforts to involve a third party in the reconciliation process were welcomed as a positive step, said Chin political analyst Salai Khaing Sar.
“This is good news for the people. The priority should be on the freedom of movement and work for the residents. It is important to address the public’s needs, and we welcome this development,” he told MPA.
Salai Nang Jone Kaim said that Division 2 of CDF (Matupi) plans to form a People Administrative Team soon, but governance and public services such as education and healthcare will only function effectively if reconciliation is achieved between the divisions.
Meanwhile, Division 1 has already formed its own People Administrative Team and begun administrative activities.
“The challenge lies in bridging the divide between CC and CB groups within the administration. Each faction may need to independently establish authority in their respective territories. Ideally, a joint committee could be formed to foster trust. However, collaboration on shared goals and separate approaches on differing issues is difficult, especially with external influences at play,” Salai Khaing Sar noted.
Since the CDF (Matupi) Division 1 and Chin Brothers (CB) alliance captured Matupi on 29 June 29, 2024, there have been tensions and blockades between factions, including CDF (Matupi) Division 2 members and the Chinland Council (CC).
In the last six months, Division 2 has suffered one fatality, one soldier with an amputated limb, and seven other injuries. Despite these challenges, it remains committed to defending Chin territory alongside CC forces for the liberation of Chin State.
