Myanmar’s UN Ambassador U Kyaw Moe Tun stated that the UN’s failure to act on the demands of the people of Myanmar represents a moral failure.
Additionally, this inaction threatens regional stability and the credibility of the UN as a global organization, highlighted Ambassador U Kyaw Moe Tun in his speech during a UN meeting held on October 18, according to the report of Myanmar’s Permanent Mission to the UN on October 22.
“The people of Myanmar have lost faith in the UN for a long time. The UN’s assistance for Myanmar’s affairs is not legitimizing the junta. Now, it has failed to even issue statements condemning the junta’s airstrikes on civilians. UN has become that neglected on Myanmar,” a political activist from Monywa noted.
The international community and the UN Security Council are urgently called upon to address immediately the demands of the Myanmar people and to take concrete action to restore democracy and the rule of law in the country, urged the ambassador.
He expressed hope that the work of the UN’s International Investigative Mechanism on Myanmar would help bring justice for victims of violence which Myanmar citizens have been striving for, and it would contribute to the restoration of the rule of law.
The junta’s efforts to dismantle the rule of law had turned the country into a haven for modern crimes from several nations, including cybercrimes, online scams, and drug trafficking with cybercrimes rising up. This condition poses a significant threat to the region and the world, the ambassador added.
