A series of Myanmar junta airstrikes targeting a detention facility held by the Mandalay People’s Defense Force (MPDF) has resulted in the deaths of 16 individuals, including a military major. The two-day bombardment caused significant casualties among prisoners of war.
The military launched another airstrike on the MDY-PDF’s detention facility around 1 AM Wednesday, killing four detainees, including a major, and injuring one, the People’s Defense Force (Mandalay) reported.
“The junta conducted an airstrike on our detention site for captured junta soldiers. We are certain they are specifically targeting captured soldiers, although the reason is unclear,” said MDY-PDF spokesperson Ko Asmond to MPA.
The MDY-PDF reported that today’s casualties included Major Nay Win and Corporal Ko Ko Aung from No. 2 Basic Military Training Depot in Thabeikkyin, Sergeant (Clerk) Aung Lwin from Artillery Battalion 319 in Meiktila, and Johnny Aung from the Pyu Saw Htee militia group.
The junta’s previous airstrike on the same prisoner detention facility on October 28, at approximately 6:30 PM, killed 12 people, including eight prisoners of war, and injured around 60.
“No additional fatalities have been reported among the 60 injured from the October 28 incident. Our PDF (Mandalay) members have not sustained significant injuries,” Ko Asmond added.
MDY-PDF also announced that they are providing medical treatment to the injured prisoners of war following the airstrikes.
