The Myanmar military junta has blocked the transport of food supplies at the Tei Pin Kyo checkpoint on the Pyay-Kamma road, located on the western bank of Pyay in the Bago Region, according to local sources.
The blockade, which began in early 2025, has seen stricter enforcement since March, further restricting access to essential goods.
A 25-year-old Pyay resident told MPA, “People traveling to buy and sell goods, including traders dealing in pots, pans, and second-hand items, are being turned back at the checkpoint. The military has blocked many goods this month.”
In addition, trucks carrying essential supplies such as rice, beverages, and soap are being denied passage. Even vehicles transporting fuel for Myanma Posts and Telecommunications (MPT) towers are not allowed through.
Currently, around 50 military personnel, including members of the military intelligence agency, have been deployed at the checkpoint to enforce strict inspections.
Ko Thet Hnin Aung, president of the Pyay Township Basic Education Students’ Union, remarked, “I believe the military is using a four-cut strategy to disrupt communication and cut off supplies to Thayet. Military intelligence agents are also playing a role in conducting thorough inspections.”
Some locals suspect that the junta’s blockade at the Tei Pin Kyo checkpoint is intended to prevent food supplies from reaching Thayet District, Minbu, and Mindon townships via Pyay.
A resident noted, “The road from Minbu connects to Pyay, Kamma, Yangon, and Ann and Padang in Rakhine. Blocking food supplies like this is making life difficult for the people.”
Clashes have been ongoing in the western part of Bago Region, near the Rakhine State border, since August 2024. Residents fear that the Arakan Army (AA) and allied revolutionary forces may launch an offensive into Pyay City via the Bago mountain range.
Following the AA’s capture of most townships in Rakhine State, fighting has spread to multiple areas, including Minhla, Minbu, Mindon, Ngape, Pwintbyu, Salin, and Sidoktaya in Magway Region; Oke Shit Pin, Padaung, and Shwedaung in Bago Region; and Pathein, Yegyi, and Thabaung in Ayeyarwady Region, which border the Rakhine mountain range.
