The military junta’s airstrikes have destroyed historic pagodas in Ye-U Township, Sagaing Region, in a targeted attack that also struck a wedding ceremony.
According to the People’s Defense Comrade force based in Ye-U, a MiG-29 fighter jet carried out the aerial assault on February 26 at around 11:00 AM, dropping two 200-pound bombs on Phaung Daw U Monastery in Me Oe village, western Ye-U. The monastery compound was hosting a wedding at the time of the attack.
Two 200-pound bombs exploded in a pond next to the Phaung Daw U Monastery compound, causing significant damage. A brick fence near the pagoda was also affected. While the wedding ceremony was not held within the monastery compound, the powerful explosions impacted the area, damaging both the Phaung Daw U stupa and the surrounding structures. “The blast left the entire vicinity of the Phaung Daw U pagoda in complete disarray,” reported Ko Htoo Khant Zaw (Amae Thar), the information officer of the People’s Defense Comrade force in Ye-U Township.
He also warned civilians to remain vigilant, stating that the junta is deliberately targeting gatherings such as weddings and novitiation ceremonies.
“Given the current situation, civilians should avoid hosting publicized ceremonies with large crowds. We urge everyone to be mindful of the life-threatening risks posed by these attacks,” he added.
Furthermore, he condemned the junta’s actions, calling it disgraceful to launch airstrikes on monasteries and stupas where traditional ceremonies take place.
Despite the destruction, no civilian casualties were reported from the aerial bombing.
