Junta-aligned ward authorities in Dawbon Township, Yangon, have been forcibly collecting monthly military service fees from households across several wards.
Local administrators in Aung Chan Thar and Warso wards of Dawbon Township, Yangon, have been collecting 10,000 kyats per household each month under the pretext of a military service fee, according to local sources.
A resident from Aung Chan Thar Ward told MPA, “Regardless of whether a household has someone of military service age, they are charging 10,000 kyats per house. This has been going on for three months. An official from the local administrative office comes to collect the money.”
Although the Aung Chan Thar administrative office initially ordered landlords to collect the fee, they refused, forcing local officials to collect the payments themselves.
A housewife from Warso Ward added, “Not all wards in Dawbon are doing this, but in our Warso Ward, they also collect 10,000 kyats per month. The bold administrators are exploiting the situation for their own benefit.”
These collections appear to be limited to Aung Chan Thar and Warso wards and have not been reported in nearby areas such as Kyi Su, La Mu Tan, and Say Sat.
Tensions in the township escalated further on Wednesday when a 100-household head and two officials were doused with gasoline and set on fire by a man while they were collecting military service registration lists in Kyi Su Ward. Two of them sustained severe injuries.
A woman from Warso Ward expressed her concern, “We are all praying that the man who set the fire does not get arrested.”
She added that as of Friday, the suspect remained at large.
