Military junta troops arrested 48 individuals in Yangon in January for forced conscription, according to a report by the Rangoon Scout Network.
Additionally, the report noted that 77 people were detained during guest list inspections, 58 were arrested on the streets, and 51 were taken into custody based on tip-offs.
A police source in Yangon told MPA, “Although arrests in the city center have decreased compared to last December, they are still ongoing, primarily targeting individuals for military conscription. Those carrying out the arrests are driven by money and often extort payments from detainees. If a bribe is paid, the detainees are usually released. The arrests are mainly conducted by soldiers and members of the Pyu Saw Htee militia. Please remain vigilant.”
According to the Rangoon Scout Network, 475 people were initially arrested in January. Of these, 58 were released, while 17 remain in detention. The fate of 397 individuals remains unknown, with no information on whether they have been freed.
Reports also suggest that some individuals were arrested on accusations of being affiliated with revolutionary groups.
The Rangoon Scout Network documented 147 of the 200 junta-led arrest incidents in Yangon Region in January, while 53 cases are still under investigation.
The Rangoon Scout Network is a Spring Revolution platform that monitors and reports on the military junta’s activities and significant incidents in the Yangon Region.
