Nearly 10,000 people displaced by conflict have taken shelter in Pale Township, Sagaing Region, according to the Pale People’s Administration (Pa Ah Pha – Pale).
The number of displaced people in Pale Township surged at the end of 2024, including those who fled the battle for Pale Town.
An official from the Pale People’s Administration (Pa Ah Pha – Pale) told MPA, “In 2024, military tensions were high in Pale Township. Some civilians fled from Pyu Saw Htee-controlled villages, while others were forced to leave their homes near Pyu Village due to artillery shelling by the military junta. As a result, eight new settlements for displaced people have emerged.”
Displaced civilians from Gangaw Township have also sought refuge in Pale Township, with some arriving to escape the newly enforced conscription law.
He continued, “One additional camp has been set up for displaced civilians from Gangaw Township, sheltering about 60 households. Another camp, housing displaced civilians from Kantthat Village in Gangaw Township, has been in Pale Township for over two years, as they are unable to return home. Despite concerns about airstrikes, Pale Township remains a relatively safer refuge for civilians.”
The displaced communities are reportedly in urgent need of food aid.
The battle for Pale Town began on Nov.11, 2024, when anti-coup forces launched an offensive. However, they were forced to retreat due to the junta’s strong defenses, which included airstrikes and reinforcements.
