Daw Zin Mar Aung, Minister of Foreign Affairs for Myanmar’s National Unity Government (NUG), affirmed that the NUG will continue its efforts to ensure Myanmar’s crisis remains a key priority in U.S. foreign policy.
The minister made these remarks during a press briefing on Wednesday, organized by the NUG’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
She said, “As the new U.S. administration is in the process of forming its government and reassessing policies, it has been difficult for us to arrange meetings and make direct calls.”
Since Jan.20 when the day President Donald Trump took office, he has issued executive orders to freeze nearly all foreign aid worldwide for 90 days, along with other related directives.
These orders have affected not only Myanmar but also neighboring countries and European nations. The minister noted that while aid has been temporarily frozen for reassessment, efforts will be made to ensure that once support is reinstated, there are no further disruptions to assistance related to Myanmar’s crisis.
“At the same time, Myanmar remains a bipartisan issue in U.S. foreign policy,” she said. “Both Democrats and Republicans have consistently prioritized it. During our campaign efforts, we engaged with leaders, members of Congress, and officials from both parties, and they reassured us of their commitment.”
She also stated that during the suspension period, the NUG’s Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and Ministry of Health will collaborate to address the challenges faced by people and refugees in Myanmar’s border regions.
