The number of child casualties continues to rise due to the brutal attacks carried out by Myanmar’s military junta, according to the Assistance Association for Political Prisoners (AAPP).
The death toll of children under 18 caused by Myanmar’s military junta was 101 in 2021, 136 in 2022, 208 in 2023, and 248 in 2024, bringing the total to 693 confirmed fatalities, according to reports.
A political activist based in Monywa told MPA, “The scope of military operations has expanded each year, and clashes have become more frequent. The military increasingly relies on airstrikes and artillery, which are indiscriminate weapons. Bombs and shells do not differentiate between adults and children. They fire with the intent to eliminate, regardless of who the victims are. This is why the number of child casualties continues to rise.”
Of the fatalities, 228 children were killed in airstrikes by the junta, while 209 died due to artillery shelling, making these the second-highest causes of death among children.
In 2024 alone, the junta killed a total of 290 civilians by gunfire, including 20 children under the age of 18, according to the AAPP.
