Myanmar’s military ruler, Min Aung Hlaing, has urged for unwavering efforts to implement measures necessary for holding elections.
The junta leader made the remarks during a government meeting organized by the military in Naypyidaw on Friday.
A Yangon-based political columnist told MPA, “When will the election take place this year? Min Aung Hlaing cannot provide a clear answer. In which townships will it be held? Resistance forces control over 90 townships, with many regions firmly under their authority. Yet, Min Aung Hlaing continues to indulge in illusions.”
As part of its election preparations, the junta conducted a census that revealed a population decline, with the total now standing at just over 51 million.
According to Min Aung Hlaing, the decrease is due to factors such as a lower birth rate, increased migration abroad for various reasons, and a rise in deaths from multiple causes.
Min Aung Hlaing acknowledged that the population decline could impact the electoral process to some degree. He also emphasized that the junta’s ongoing preparations focus on ensuring stability and enforcing the rule of law as essential prerequisites for holding the election.
The military junta has announced its plan to hold elections in 2025.
