A school in Ta Gay Laung Village, Bilin Township, Thaton District, suffered significant damage after a military junta deployed improvised explosive suicide drones in a reported strike.
The Central Committee of the Karen National Union (KNU) announced on Friday that the attack took place at around 5 p.m. on Thursday. Two improvised explosive suicide drones were deployed in the strike—one hitting the roof of the school building and the other detonating nearby.
A member of the People’s Defense Forces (PDF) based in Thaton District told MPA, “Artillery shelling is common in the Bilin and Kyaikto areas, but now they’ve started using drones. They do this for two reasons: to scare people because they’re afraid of PDF attacks, and to test their weapons. They’re basically using civilians to see how well their equipment works.”
The attack caused extensive damage to the school’s roof and facade, leaving residents of Ta Gay Laung Village and nearby areas in fear. As a result, local schools have been temporarily closed.
The KNU accused the junta of deliberately targeting civilian areas, including schools and residential neighborhoods, through drone strikes.
