Residents in Yangon report that street abductions resembling robberies remain a troubling issue across the city.
Men believed to be junta troops disguised in civilian attire are allegedly targeting young civilians, arresting them for unclear reasons. Although the frequency has declined since the peak in December 2024, these incidents persist, according to a police source currently stationed in Yangon.
A source told MPA, “The recent arrests appear to be politically motivated or aimed at military conscription. Some of those making the arrests wear civilian clothes, making it difficult to identify who is behind these actions. While the frequency of arrests in Yangon has decreased since December, they are still ongoing. Individuals detained for minor political reasons are reportedly not imprisoned but are subjected to beatings during military interrogations before being sent to military training camps.”
Young people captured in these incidents are allegedly sent to military conscription markets, where monetary transactions reportedly take place.
“Although these arrests are presented as official duties, there’s a financial motive involved. The individuals carrying out the arrests are said to earn a significant amount for each person they capture, which encourages them to be more active. People need to remain vigilant,” the source added.
These abduction-like arrests are reported to occur primarily in the suburban areas of Yangon.
In addition, Yangon-based military troops are allegedly looting valuables and money from civilian homes under the pretext of overnight guest registration.
