The military junta carried out airstrikes on Shwe Si Gyi Village in Mandalay Region’s Taungtha Township early Sunday morning, deploying paragliders to drop bombs that killed a woman and injured a child.
According to the Taungtha Township People’s Defense Team, three paragliders from Meiktila Air Base dropped five bombs on the village at around 4:30 a.m., damaging several homes and killing two cows.
A Defense Team official told MPA, “Three paragliders approached the village. One circled in a loop and turned back without dropping anything, while the other two dropped bombs. A woman was killed instantly, and a child was injured. The incident occurred while they were inside their home.”
The official explained that the junta’s use of paragliders for aerial attacks is a cost-effective strategy.
“They seem to aim for maximum impact while minimizing costs in aerial strikes,” the official noted.
This was not the first time the junta used paragliders for attacks in Taungtha Township. Similar aerial strikes were carried out on Za Yat Gyi Village on Dec.26, 2024, and Jan.3, 2025, although no casualties were reported in those incidents.
