The Myanmar junta suffered the loss of at least 53 senior military officers, including brigadiers, colonels, and lieutenant colonels, who were killed, wounded, or captured in 2024, according to the annual military developments report released on Saturday by the Ministry of Defense of the National Unity Government (NUG).
The report states that attacks by the People’s Defense Forces (PDF), People’s Defense Teams (Pa Ka Pha), and ethnic resistance organizations resulted in the deaths of 315 military officers and injuries to 127 others in 2024.
Additionally, the junta’s forces—including soldiers, police, and border guards—suffered significant losses, with 14,093 fatalities and 7,363 injuries. According to the NUG, these losses equate to the destruction of more than 10 full battalions of the junta’s armed forces.
Resistance forces captured 741 junta military bases during the year, with 162 located in Sagaing, Magway, Mandalay, Bago, and Tanintharyi regions. These bases were seized through coordinated efforts by the PDFs, Pa Ka Pha, and local defense forces.
Key towns such as Khampat, Shwe Pyi Aye, Maw Lu, Myothit, Sintgu, Takaung, Thabeikkyin, and Pinlaebu were successfully captured and held by resistance forces. Furthermore, the PDF, Pa Ka Pha, and allied revolutionary groups carried out sieges and attacks on at least 67 towns across Sagaing, Magway, Mandalay, Bago, and Tanintharyi regions.
The NUG’s Ministry of Defense highlighted that PDF battalions and units, in collaboration with allied ethnic resistance organizations (EROs), are actively engaging in liberation battles across all seven states. This coordinated effort underscores the resistance’s determination to expand territorial control and further weaken the junta’s forces.
