National Unity Government (NUG) Prime Minister Mann Win Khaing Than has hailed the International Criminal Court’s (ICC) effort to issue an arrest warrant for Min Aung Hlaing as a significant and encouraging step for the Spring Revolution.
Mann Win Khaing Than, who also serves as the chairperson of the committee, spoke during the NUG Interim Local Administrative Implementation Central Committee meeting held today in his opening speech.
A Yangon-based political analyst told MPA, “At a time when China is openly supporting the military junta and interfering in Myanmar’s internal affairs in a bold and systematic way, the ICC’s move to seek an arrest warrant for Min Aung Hlaing is significant. It’s likely that he will soon carry the label of ‘fugitive Min Aung Hlaing.’ Even if he avoids arrest, his reputation will be tarnished, and his dignity diminished. The simple act of boarding a plane for international travel will become a source of anxiety for him. This development offers a glimmer of hope for the Spring Revolution.”
Mann Win Khaing Than emphasized that the move by the ICC also serves as a warning bell for those attempting to illegitimately wrest power from the people. Although justice may sometimes take time, truth always reaches its destination, and he urged everyone to continue striving together for the journey ahead.
The ICC’s Chief Prosecutor submitted a request on Wednesday to issue an arrest warrant against coup leader Min Aung Hlaing for crimes committed against the Rohingya population. Judges at the ICC will now determine whether the legal standards required for the issuance of the warrant are met.
