The Arakan Army (AA) has reportedly apprehended individuals involved in theft and looting in Toungup Town, Rakhine State. According to local sources, the stolen items are set to be returned to their rightful owners as the AA works to address public concerns over security and property.
The AA announced Friday that thieves in Toungup Town are being arrested daily along with the stolen goods. The group continues to pursue and detain those involved in such acts.
A Rakhine writer told MPA, “These thieves have become bold. Many residents have placed male family members as guards at home to prevent theft, while others have fled. When fighting intensifies, the military indiscriminately shoots or conducts airstrikes, resulting in casualties among those left behind as guards. Once towns are captured, it is necessary to completely eliminate these opportunist thieves.”
Although the stolen goods recovered from the thieves are to be returned to their rightful owners, the AA security forces are currently safeguarding the items due to the ongoing intense battles.
The AA further stated that during the period when it had not yet fully taken control of Toungup Town, the military junta forces had looted and destroyed public property in the town, conducted airstrikes, and caused significant damage to civilian homes and belongings. Residents who were unable to carry away their belongings when fleeing left behind valuables such as gold and silver jewelry stored in safes, heavy household items, clothing, machinery, food supplies, and even livestock including buffalo, cows, chickens, and pigs. These items were subsequently stolen or destroyed by certain local individuals and others exploiting the situation.
After 17 days of sustained military operations, the AA announced on Sunday that it had successfully seized control of Toungup Town.
