At least twelve men have died in Myanmar’s military detention centers within the first ten months of 2023, highlighting the brutal conditions and mistreatment faced by detainees.
From 1 January to 29 October, 2024, twelve men died in military Interrogation, with each name verified. These deaths occurred in Interrogation facilities across Minbya, Taung Goke, Rathedaung, Ngaputaw, Kyauk Khin, Maubin, Monywa, Yayphyu, Thaketa, Magway, and Taungoo, according to the Association for Assistance to Political Prisoners (AAPP).
“Of those who died, it has been confirmed that two deaths resulted from torture, and two were caused by shooting. Investigations are ongoing to determine the causes of death for the remaining individuals,” an AAPP representative told MPA.
In addition, AAPP reported that eleven men died in police stations, while two women and 25 men died in prisons, bringing the total number of reported deaths to 50.
Out of all reported deaths, only three bodies were released to their families, while authorities merely informed the families of the other deaths without releasing the bodies, according to an AAPP official.
“A thorough record of these incidents is essential, and there needs to be accountability for those responsible. It is also crucial for all to work toward achieving justice for the victims,” the official added.
Since the start of the failed military coup on 1 February, 2021, 5,901 people, including democracy activists and civilians, have reportedly been killed by the military and its affiliates, according to AAPP.
