Fifteen political prisoners have died this year in Myanmar’s prisons due to inadequate medical treatment, according to reports.
Between 1 January and 17 October 2024, a total of 15 political detainees passed away in various prisons, the Political Prisoners Network Myanmar (PPNM) confirmed.
“In October alone, three prisoners died due to lack of proper medical care. They included Dr. Zaw Myint Maung, U Htay Aung Kyaw from Thayarwaddy Prison, and another inmate from Dawei Prison,” U Thike Tun Oo, a leading committee member of PPNM told MPA.
In 2023, at least 17 political prisoners died due to insufficient medical care.
“This situation underscores the urgent need for greater attention to prison conditions. The deaths of these political prisoners highlight the inadequacy of prison healthcare,” he added.
Of the 15 political prisoners who died this year, three were from Daik-U Prison, the highest number from a single facility, followed by two deaths each in Kyaikmaraw and Thayat prisons.
On 9 October , Dr. Zaw Myint Maung, the Vice Chairman of the National League for Democracy and Chief Minister of Mandalay Region, died in custody due to inadequate medical treatment.
