In the past four months, over 455 civilians have been killed and 812 injured due to airstrikes by the State Administration Council (SAC Air Force, according to reports.
From May to August 2024, SAC Air Force carried out 820 air raids, with a total of 1,321 attacks. On average, seven airstrikes were conducted per day. During these four months, Rakhine State experienced 176 airstrikes, making it the region most affected by these attacks, followed by 151 airstrikes in northern Shan State and 132 in Mandalay Region, according to a report by Nyan Lynn Thit Analytica.
“SAC Air Force’s airstrikes deliberately target civilian areas, fully aware of the presence of civilians. A current example is in Lashio, where civilians are continuously being bombed. The question of why the military is bombing civilians can be answered by the fact that the international community’s responses have been limited to mere condemnations, without more substantial action. The situation in Lashio also reflects China’s alignment with the SAC,” a political analyst told MPA.
Among the victims of the airstrikes were 40 children who lost their lives, while 43 others were injured. Additionally, 61 religious buildings, 28 schools, and 16 hospitals and clinics were damaged, according to the Nyan Lynn Thit Analytica’s report.
The report also mentioned that SAC has been conducting airstrikes in support of its ground offensives, as well as providing air support during attacks on their bases and assaults on military convoys. The use of fighter jets, helicopters, drones, and other aircraft during these operations has been documented.
Since the military seized power in 2021, up until August 2024, a total of 1,749 civilians have been killed, and 2,453 injured as a result of SAC Air Force’s airstrikes.
Over the course of these more than four years, the frequency of airstrikes by SAC has steadily increased each year, leading to a significant rise in civilian casualties.
