Although visitation at Shwebo Prison, which had been suspended for three months, was resumed, political prisoners were denied this provision, according to reports.
In October 2023, the military council allowed visitation in prisons to resume. However, since June 1, 2024, visitation at Shwebo Prison had been halted due to orders from Lieutenant Colonel Aung Aung, the local military commander of Shwebo, according to the report of the Political Prisoners Network Myanmar (PPNM) on October 8 (Today).
“They cited military rule and security concerns as reasons for suspending visitation. On October 7, regular criminal inmates were allowed visits, but political prisoners were not included. This is a violation of the rights they deserve,” Ko Thike Htun Oo, a steering committee member of PPNM, told MPA.
On October 7, prison visitations were resumed for regular inmates following requests from their families.
Shwebo Prison holds hundreds of political prisoners, both men, and women, and PPNM noted that the ongoing military situation in the Sagaing Region has prompted difficulties for families to send care packages to those incarcerated.
