Western embassies, including that of the United States, have called for the immediate release of all unjustly detained individuals.
This demand was included in statements released by the embassies of the United States, the United Kingdom, the European Union delegation to Myanmar, France, and Canada in relation to the passing of Dr. Zaw Myint Maung, Vice Chairman of the National League for Democracy (NLD) and Chief Minister of Mandalay Region.
“We acknowledge the international statements regarding U Zaw, and we welcome the calls for the release of political prisoners. However, it is clear that mere calls for release will not suffice, as the military has repeatedly demonstrated. The international community must provide practical assistance to the Spring Revolution,” said an activist based in Monywa.
Dr. Zaw Myint Maung had been imprisoned by the State Administration Council (SAC) since the 2021 coup. His health steadily declined during his time in detention, as he was denied proper medical treatment for years, according to statements from the U.S. Department of State and the European Union delegation to Myanmar.
Since the military coup, more than 21,000 political prisoners have been detained, which has drawn significant international concern. The British Embassy in Yangon highlighted that political leaders in Myanmar have endured severe hardships for standing by their beliefs.
The embassy also expressed concern that, like Dr. Zaw Myint Maung, many political prisoners are being held in extremely harsh conditions, without access to adequate medical care.
The U.S. Department of State said that political leaders should be able to participate freely in political processes, and the immediate release of all unjustly detained individuals must take place. The United States further called on SAC to cease violence against civilians and engage in constructive dialogue with all relevant stakeholders.
The Netherlands Embassy also issued a statement mentioning that during Dr. Zaw Myint Maung’s time as Chief Minister, he successfully implemented the Pyigyidagun Water Supply Project, though this project was halted following the 2021 coup.
