At least 19 civilian deaths were initially reported in the ongoing floods in Naypyidaw, according to the Myanmar Fire Services Department.
The Myanmar Fire Services Department also stated that the flood victims were 13 women and six men, with rescue operations still underway.
“The bodies were found as the water started to recede. It is just the initial list as they mentioned. The actual death toll is estimated at around 200 civilians across Naypyidaw. The military council did nothing to prevent this, and when the floods occurred, there was no effective rescue effort,” a resident of Pyinmana, Naypyidaw said.
Villages throughout the Naypyidaw region were unprepared for the sudden flooding, with Tatkon Township being the hardest-hit area as the source added.
Since the morning of September 11, Naypyidaw has been affected by severe flooding, causing a significant number of people to climb onto rooftops, trees, and other elevated areas since many homes were submerged.
There were 17 deaths in Yamethin Township, Mandalay Region, according to the Myanmar Fire Services Department report on the evening of September 12. Additionally, unconfirmed reports suggesting that as many as 230 bodies may have been found in Yamethin Township have been spreading.
