It is reported that a male political prisoner receiving treatment at the Insein Prison Hospital was raped by a senior prisoner.
The Political Prisoner Network Myanmar (PPNM) announced on 4 September that senior prisoner Zin Myo Ko (also known as Myo Gyi) raped a 25-year-old male political prisoner, who had been sentenced under Section 50(j) of the Terrorism Act, after beating and threatening him at around 3:00 AM of 20 August.
“This is a crime, but no action has been taken within the prison. This incident highlights the actions of prison officials who are protecting their stooges,” Ko Thike Tun Oo, an executive committee member of PPNM, told MPA.
The PPNM announcement further stated that Warden Aung Kyaw Sint covered up for the rapist, Zin Myo Ko, and threatened both the victim and the perpetrator, warning that he would place them in solitary confinement if news of the rape case leaked outside or even within the prison.
“The victim has suffered both physically and emotionally, and his security is now at risk due to warden Aung Kyaw Sint’s threats to keep the rape case silent,” Ko Thike Tun Oo added.
It is reported that the senior prisoner and rapist, Zin Myo Ko, is serving a 10-year sentence for a previous rape case.
PPNM has vowed to pursue serious actions against prison officials and their associates who are intentionally committing severe violations of human rights and prisoners’ rights.
