Reports indicate that the SAC forces prohibited young residents of Kyaukme City, located in Northern Shan State, from returning to their homes after fleeing from battles.
According to a resident of Kyaukme, youths from Kyaukme who had temporarily relocated to Taunggyi were denied entry as they attempted to return home at a military checkpoint near Kyaukgu Village in Lawksawk Township starting on 30 August.
“They were returning to Kyaukme from Taunggyi, accompanied by their mothers. However, upon reaching the Kyaukgu checkpoint, junta forces only allowed the elders to pass through. They specifically banned the youth, stating that only individuals over 45 years old were allowed to return to Kyaukme. All youths, both male and female, were denied entry,” the resident informed MPA.
Currently, on the route from Taunggyi to Kyaukme, there are at least five military checkpoints.
A resident living near No. 4 Basic High School in Kyaukme reported that approximately 30 residents who had fled the fighting had first returned to the city on 16 August. The fled residents are gradually returning now.
“Now, the Central Market has reopened, and morning markets, including Mingalar Market, Free Text Market, and Upper Namhuutaung Village Market, are also open. And, a few businesses are also re-operating. The roads have sustained damage but are still usable,” the resident added.
It has been reported that on 29 August, the State Administration Council (SAC) conducted airstrikes on Kyaukme City, destroying several houses, but no civilian casualties.
As of today, 1 September, the situation in Kyaukme City remains stable, with no significant military movements observed.
The Ta’ang National Liberation Army (TNLA) captured Kyaukme City on 6 August.
