Reports indicate that the flooding in villages along the banks of Myitmakha River in Thayarwaddy Township, Bago Region, have ensued food shortages.
The Myitmakha River has overflown villages along its banks since July 20 due to excessive rainfall, inundating on July 22 with water levels slightly receding as of today (August 2), according to some local residents.
“Some dry rations and bottled water have been provided. The water level has receded a bit today. Some people who can’t leave their homes are also giving back what they have,” explained a volunteer assisting flood victims in Thayarwaddy to MPA.
Around 600 flood victims from inundating villages such as Myitkyo, Eiklaha, Zeepwe, Daw Wi, Aikadon, Athayaw, Beelin, Phoe Khaung, San Yway, and Auk Latpan Khon, have been temporarily relocated. Some residents, particularly those in houses built on stilts, have not moved.
Evacuated flood victims are staying at Maha Htupayon Monastery and RCM Church in Thonse, Christian Church in Thayarwaddy, Innywa Sarphyusu Christian Church, Innywa Mingalarzayyon Monastery, and San Yway-Nyaung Tharyar Cyclone Shelter where social organizations are assisting them.
Additionally, flooding has eroded the asphalt road approaching to Bailey Bridge No. 3 on the Ahlelkone-San Yway-Phoe Khaung Road and Bailey Bridge No. 2 near San Yway and Nyaung Pin Thar Villages.
