Five young men were arrested while trying to flee from their town because they didn’t want to serve in the military, in Hinthada town, Ayeyarwady Region, according to locals.
The five young men were arrested at night on May 17, and those five were placed in the Infantry Battalion-18 and sent to attend military training, as well as being cut off from their families.
“Many soldiers raided the houses and arrested those five youths. They (soldiers) beat them and took them away. They arrested 5 young men, asking whether those young men wanted to run away because they didn’t want to join the military service,” a man from Pitaukone village told MPA.
The five arrested youths were not people who voted for military service, and one of the five was charged under Penal Code section 505-A but released on bail, he added.
“The boys are between the ages of 23 and 28. I don’t know how they came to arrest those boys after hearing the news. It’s sad to see them being beaten in front of their parents,” said a woman close to the arrested person.
According to a person close to the village administrator of Pitaukone, they have started collecting lists for the 2nd batch of military service in Hinthada town.
