Yesterday evening, a roadside mine exploded in Kyo Thoepin Ward, Kalay town, Sagaing Region, causing a 12-year-old child killed and a 14-year-old child injured, according to residents.
On September 28, at about 5:30 p.m., a mine exploded near the Moon Lai Church in Kyo Thoepin Ward, causing the children riding bicycles were injured.
“The kids are riding their bikes. Near the church, a mine exploded near the dead child. He was hit in the chest and stomach and sent to the hospital. He died on the way. One of them was sent to a nearby hospital,” a Kalay resident told MPA.
The child who died due to the mine explosion is Mg Joset Thangvel, a fourth-grade student. Kyo Thoepin Ward is located in the west of Kalay town and is a ward where the majority of Chin people live.
On September 22, 3 landmines exploded on the road in the Kyo Thoepin neighborhood, and 5 people were still injured by landmines.
“It doesn’t know which groups planted the mines. People are going in panic. Mines are broken here and there,” the resident continued.
Last July 29, a man who was picking up garbage had his leg amputated when a bomb exploded near the irrigation office on Kyansitthat road.
On August 8, a landmine exploded near the cemetery of Nyangtaw Village, north of Kalay town, and 3 villagers from Douyangchung village, who were going to the cowshed, were hit by a landmine, killing one and injuring two others.
After that, according to the people’s information, the CNO/CNDF went to remove the remaining mines near the scene of the incident and the mines near Aung village.
In addition, on August 14, at around 8:00 a.m., a mine exploded near the junction of General Street and Busta Road, killing 39-year-old U Lon Lam Thang, who was watering flowers.
“I don’t want any group to do it on the roads where the people are travelling. The people are no longer safe about where and what will happen,” a resident of Kalay told MPA about the mining issue.
Kalay town is a military focal point for the SAC Military (for the western part of Sagaing Region and Chin State) and it is known that the SAC Military is conducting daily security measures on the city.
