Myanmar’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Ambassador U Kyaw Moe Tun, has renewed his call for the international community and the UN to reject the military junta’s planned elections and enforce strict sanctions on arms and aviation fuel supplies to the regime.
Ambassador U Kyaw Moe Tun stressed the urgent need for immediate action to protect the lives and future of the Myanmar people during his speech at a media briefing on Myanmar’s crisis at the UN Security Council on Friday.
He urged the international community to reject the junta’s sham elections, cut off the military’s access to arms, and enforce a strict embargo on aviation fuel and dual-use materials that could support military operations.
A Yangon-based political analyst noted that while the UN Security Council’s ability to take direct action is limited, the ambassador’s appeal increases diplomatic pressure.
“The reality is that Russia and China, as permanent members of the Security Council, will continue to block any decisive action against the junta,” the analyst told MPA. “However, these calls for action raise international scrutiny and put diplomatic pressure on them.”
An air force officer who joined the Civil Disobedience Movement (CDM) emphasized that curbing the junta’s airstrike capabilities requires two key strategies: restricting jet fuel imports and targeting fuel storage facilities.
“Every air base has underground fuel storage tanks. Resistance groups can pinpoint their locations through informants, but hitting them accurately with short-range missiles is difficult—it would take a lucky shot,” he explained.
“A more feasible approach would be planting explosives near storage sites, but that would be extremely risky for those involved. The most effective solution is enforcing a strict ban on jet fuel imports.”
Ambassador U Kyaw Moe Tun warned that time is running out to protect the Myanmar people and urged the UN Security Council to take decisive action. He called on the UN and ASEAN to play a meaningful role in resolving Myanmar’s crisis with a long-term, sustainable solution that aligns with the will and best interests of the people.
He also criticized the Security Council’s failure to take concrete steps, stating that its inaction has led to growing disillusionment among the people of Myanmar.
“Despite the adoption of Resolution 2669 on Myanmar, the Security Council has failed to enforce its provisions,” he said. “The people of Myanmar live in fear every day. No one feels safe.”
An official from the People’s Defense Team – Myingyan echoed this sentiment, stating that the junta is deliberately terrorizing civilians.
“Their goal is to instill fear,” the official said. “But in reality, these brutal attacks are only strengthening people’s resolve against them.”
Ambassador U Kyaw Moe Tun concluded by stating that while the people of Myanmar continue to suffer under brutal conditions, the junta remains relentless in committing war crimes, crimes against humanity, and atrocities against its own citizens.
